Melanie Drentprofessional illustrator
My name is Melanie Drent and I am a Dutch professional illustrator, creative developer and designer. As an illustrator I watch a lot and continue to marvel at all kinds of things. Every day I try to see the world as if I were a tourist in my own country or city. This is something I hope to inspire others with. This looking and thinking is also essential for me to create illustrations that are slightly different and provide food for thought. I also like to take the client with me on this journey.
Illustrations are my passion. From the age of four - actually from the moment I could draw - I knew that I wanted to make this my profession later on. After graduating from high school, I went to the Art Academy in Utrecht in the direction of Illustration. Here I graduated Summa Cum Laude with my own illustrated and written book, which I also did the Art Direction of. I like to think broadly and to bring this together into a product that is rock solid. My graduation project is an example of this.
I illustrate for many different clients, depicting an emotion or idea. Characteristic of my style is the simplicity but also the humor. That is also the way I approach life. I like to simplify things and I like to approach situations positively. Where necessary with a joke. This simplification of reality is also reflected in my illustrations. In this way, a simple line drawing can sometimes suffice.
Another passion of mine is to give shape to things that do not yet exist. Think of non-existent plants or animals or situations that are impossible to photograph. Because they are in the future or simply do not exist.
Actually, it is a sport for me to look as closely as possible into the head of the client, who often already has an idea, to visualize it and where possible take it a step further. Of course in such a way that 'in the end' it will become a beautiful illustration that the client is extremely satisfied with.
When it comes to method, I'm to the point; I like to substantiate my illustrations with arguments and have a no-nonsense mentality. That's why I like to switch quickly.
