BOOK ILLUSTRATIONS

Bookillustrations

Do you want to have book illustrations made, because you want to publish your story as an illustrated book? Then you've come to the right place. In recent years I illustrated for several books. The style ranged from more simple line drawings with a wink to very detailed illustrations for books. I make illustrations in both, color and black and white. Below is a small selection:

Breda Folktales Stories

For the fairytale-like children's book Bredase folktales I made 22 illustrations, including the book cover. The nice thing is that the book brings 16 different stories - written by Naomi Jansen - that have been told for years in the region of the beautiful Nassau city of Breda. Because this children's book contains so much drawing, you will find here more about the book and the process. Here you will also find some drawing videos and a radio broadcast in which Naomi and I tell more about the children's book.

Illustrations from the book Bredase Folktales.
All hand drawn in large format ranging from 297 x 420 mm to 420 x 594 mm. All drawings are scanned in high resolution. They are also available as a high-quality print in my webshop at www.melaniedrent.com
illustratie in spread van het boek
Illustration of the Nassaus in the castle of Breda.
The nice thing about drawing historical illustrations is that I really have to do research to get the drawing right. What did the people eat?, What did the interior look like? What were they wearing?
Together with my imagination this leads to new illustrations of what it would have looked like at that time.

In 7 steps to a rich life - Iris Brik

"Am I the one I want to be or am I the one who wants others to see me like this?"
For financial planner Iris Brik I made the book about and the 12 illustrations for her book: 'In 7 steps to a rich life': a step-by-step plan to lead a rich (not only financially) life. The book is for sale at various bookstores such as the Donner in Rotterdam and of course online. Below is an overview of a few illustrations that are in the book.
Graphic design: Esther works.

boekcover laten maken
The text of the book is purposeful, light-hearted and with humor written by the author. The graphic design book of www.estherwerkt.nl is clear and transparent. I have drawn the illustrations with a wink in clear lines. By approaching the subject of the text from a different angle, the illustration does not become explanatory or instructive, but rather triggers you to read the text.
illustratie in een boek laten maken
Illustration: narcissism.
For example, on page 169 I made the illustration about narcissism. I deliberately chose to draw this intense material in a more humorous way, instead of illustrating the fear. In the illustration, for example, a kind of awareness emerges and the text elaborates on this. (Narcissists can of course also be women)

boekillustratie social media
Illustration: The influence of Social Media
A very familiar situation for many people. (p.33)

On page 95 I made an illustration about 'Not being able to say no' or trying to keep all the balls high.

In this line I also made all 12 other illustrations.

On page 69 I made an illustration about separation anxiety.

illustratie in bok laten maken

For the book De Groene Breinbrekers I made 14 book illustrations and the book cover.
It is a book about sustainability.
The book provides answers to questions related to socially relevant topics, such as food waste, solar energy, the future of the natural gas grid, and the barriers to biocremation.
Graphic design: Studio-10 and B5 studio.
handgetekende illustratie op de kaft

(In English Brein Brekers means Brain Teasers)
overzicht van illustraties
All illustrations in this book are line illustrations printed on uncoated FSC Munken paper. In this case, it was the client's wish to work with an extra color (in PMS green) in addition to black and white. The corporate identity of De Breinbrekers is green (it refers to a better sustainable world) and that made it a beautiful green and round story.
